Spring 2  Week 7

Our story this week has been ‘The dinosaur that pooped a planet’.

We continued to develop our ‘Nursery Powers’ to promote positive behaviour.

We worked together to create planets using Papier Mache, then painting and decorated them for our classroom space display.

Like Danny, the main character from the story, we enjoyed playing with our dinosaur friends in the small world area and using them to act out parts of the story we remembered.

We used our large stomping feet in the outdoor area to move like big dinosaurs and included our very best claws and roars!

Using the small world dinosaurs, we made footprints in playdough and noticed the similarities and differences between them.

In preparation we have been talking about why it is such a special celebration for Christians and what they do to mark the occasion, we also had loads of fun engaging with a range of Easter arts and crafts.

Wishing each and every one of you a wonderful Easter holiday and we look forward to hearing about all your fun times when we return to school to start the Summer term.

Spring 2 Week 6

Our story this week has been 'Supertato!'

 

On Monday we made 'evil peas' from the story then hid them for Supertato to find, we celebrated our superhero when he saved the day!

 

We made grass heads using grass seed, tights and sawdust. They look great in our classroom and we will enjoy watching them grow and giving them new haristyles over the next few weeks. We have been learning about what a seed needs to grow and how to care for live plants and the environment.

 

Whilst playing with our friends, we have been using our 'Nursery Powers' to help us to share, care and help each other.

 

We enjoyed making characters from the story and using potatoes to print with paint.

 

In maths, we focussed on counting, using our fingers to represent the numbers. We played lots of number games and pinched our fingers to help us count.

 

In literacy, our phonics sound of the week was 'c'. Our teachers were impressed at all the words we could think of that started with the 'c' sound.

 

On Friday we invited parents in to join our Easter Craft Workshop. The children even performed Easter songs and everyone had an amazing time!

Spring 2 Week 5

Our story this week has been 'Room on the Broom'.

We have enjoyed reenacting the story using props. We made our own magic wands and broomsticks using a range of creative materials.

We have also been making Mother's Day cards and talking about why we love our moms and how they help us.

In phonics we have learnt the sound 'o' and have continued to orally blend the sounds in words to read.

In maths we have enjoyed playing number recognition games and have learnt lots of number songs.

We had lots of fun making witches potions in the water tray. We even added props from the story (a bone, a cone, a twig and a flower) to make our potions magic!

We have used story-telling language to help us join in with retelling the talked about what  happened at the beginning, middle and end of the story.

Spring 2 Week 4

Our story of the week was 'My friend bear' by Jez Alborough. In the story, Eddie and Bear are both feeling sad and wish they had a friend to talk to. We Talked about what It means to be a good friend and how we can help each other.

 

In literacy, our sound of the week was 'g'. We practised hearing words that begin with 'g' and played oral blending games.

 

In maths, we used positional language to describe the positions of objects and people. We used the words; in, on, under, behind, through and inbetween. We even listened to the story 'We're going on a bear hunt' and joined in with the repeated refrains and positional language.

"We cant go over it, we can't go under it....oh no! We have to go through it!"

 

On Friday, we invited our Teddy bears to a picnic at school. 

We had fun pretending to shop for our picnic, making playdough cakes to take and writing shopping lists. Our Teddy bears were very well behaved and the children made them all feel very welcome in Nursery.

We also made an effort to dress in red or 80s inspired clothing to support Comic Relief.

Spring 2 Week 3

Our story of the week was 'Where's my teddy?'

On Monday, we went on a bear hunt and found the teddy in a basket!

We enjoyed making our very own bears using collage materials, then using scissors to snip the paper to add texture to our bears fur. 

We printed bears using apples, and then painted grass backgrounds using forks.

After hearing the story, we talked about the main characters and learned that Eddie and the Bear were sad about losing their teddys.

In maths, we have been learning to order objects by size, using the language; big, bigger, biggest and small, smaller, smallest. We also explored height and used a tape measure to compare the size of our friends and teachers.

Our new sound in phonics was 'd' and we are doing a fantastic job at learning to orally blend and hear the inital sounds in words.

 

Spring 2 Week 2

Nursery have had a very exciting week. We enjoyed reading the story 'Aliens love underpants' and made our own playdough aliens, using a range of materials to create their body parts and other alien features.

We created a space small world role plat area using classroom props.

On Tuesday, we celebrated pancake day. We enjoyed talking about our favourite toppings and the ingredients needed to make a pancake.

We also talked about healthy eating and how to stay safe in the kitchen.

Nursery made some amazing playdough pancakes and pretended to fry them in the home corner.

We fpund a story called 'The runaway pancake' and enjoyed joining in with the different parts of the story.

In maths, we have been looking at patterns, inside and outside. We also created repeated patterns using different objects in the classroom.

Our sound this week has been 'm'. We are continuing to segment and blend words using the sounds we know and can hear in words.

On Thursday, we celebrated World Book Day. The teachers were super impressed with the wonderful costumes!

At the end of the week, we changed the soil in the snail tank and fed them fresh salad. We love our class pets and are learning how to care and look after them.

 

Spring 2 Week 1

The story of the week was 'Whatever Next' by Jill Murphy.

The children have enjoyed large junk modelling, making a rocket for baby bear to get to the moon!

We used collage techniques and a range of materials to make suncatchers which we displayed on the Nursery windows.

We even recieved a letter from baby bear who invited us to a picnic on the moon. We had loads of fun making our own jam sandwiches to take with us!

Our phonics sound this week has been 'n' and in maths, we have been learning to group objects and use the language of number and size to compare amounts.

 

Spring 1 Week 6

The story of the week was 'Hansel and Gretel'.

Children have enjoyed creating their own lollipops using a range of craft materials. They also used junk modelling techniques to build the gingerbread cottage in the woods.

We made class story books for morning and afternoon Nursery.

The children worked really hard to create pictures and use them to retell the story in their own words.

In maths, we learnt how to subtise 1, 2 and 3, and labelled parts of our classroom with these numbers and the corrresponding numbers of dots.

In phonics, we have been learning the sound 'i' as well as practising our oral blending.

Nursery enjoyed wrapping dough to make our own sweets.

We talked about stranger danger and how we always need to stay with an adult when we are out and about.

We talked about the characters in the story and learnt the new word 'dove'. We know that a dove is a white bird.

The children enjoyed hot-seating the witch from the story. They asked her why her house was made of sweets on the outside and scary within.

On Friday we celebrated Valentine's Day. We had lots of fun making cards, printing with heart-shaped sponges, and cutting heart shapes out of playdough.

Spring 1 Week 5

Our story this week was Goldilocks and the three bears. 

We enjoyed exploring porridge oats in our water tray and creating bear masks.

We have been using the words; "first", "next" and "last" to describe story events and acted out the story using props.

We have worked together to create a story scene in the small world area and created a house for the bears using construction materials.

We made bears out of playdough and drew pictures of our favoutie parts and characters from the story.

In maths, we have been sorting objects into groups of big and small, as well as counting out objects from a larger group.

Our new sound in phonics this week was 'p'.

On Friday we celebrated Number Day and came dressed in fabulous, number inspired outfits! We had lots of fun counting and making our very own number blocks!

Spring 1 - Week 4

This week we learnt the traditional tale 'The three little pigs'.

We enjoyed making pigs out of play-dough, setting up a new scene in the small world area and acting out the story using the new vocabulary and story language we have heard.

On Wednesday we celebrated Chinese New Year and our home corner became a Chinese resturant for the day with lots of menus, chopsticks and wool noodles!

Nursery enjoyed taking part in lots of craft activities relating to the story of Chinese New Year and the great animal race that made up the years on the Chinese calendar.

In phonics we have been learning the sound 't' and having lots of fun hearing the sound in words and looking for things that start with the sound by playing Ispy.

Spring 1 - Week 3

Our story of the week has been 'The Ugly Duckling'.

We enjoyed creating our own ducks, using a variety of materials and artistic techniquesm and worked together to collage a large class swan.

Nursery learnt that a baby swan is called a "cygnet" and that a group of swans is called a "flight" when in the air and a "bank" when on the ground.

In maths we have been learning to count objects, subitise and recognise numbers with our number fishing game. We also had lots of fun catching and counting ducks in the water tray.

In phonics this week, our sound was 'a'. We are getting better at hearing the sounds in words and playing sound blending games at group time.

Spring 1 - Week 2

Our new teachers started with us this week and we have spent lots of time getting to know Mrs Timmins and Miss Murphy.

This week we have been learning the traditional tale; 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff'.

We enjoyed playing as the different characters, reenacting the story.

We have had lots of fun building bridges in the construction areas inside and outside, using a variety of materials and resources, working collaboratively as a team!

We also created our own new small world area with mini characters! 

In our maths, we explored the positional language of over, under, in front and behind, using the billy goats and bridges from our story. We also talked about the language of size, exploring big, middle sized and small.

We started learning our phonics sounds and the sound of the week was 's'.

Spring 1 - Week 1

This week we have been reading the story of Little Red Riding Hood.

We have had lots of fun engaging with the story and acting out the parts of the characters in  the role play area, being careful to watch out for the big baf wolf!

We have also been learning a new rhyme 'Miss Molly had a dolly'.

In maths, we have been continuing our number work and saying numbers in the correct order, forwards and backwards.

Week Seven, Autumn two

Nursery have been very busy this week practising their independent cutting skills, they have also been recalling shape facts as they make festive pictures, as well as playing a Christmas lotto game matching up the pictures on their board. 

On Thursday we had a Christmas party, showing our best dance moves, playing games and having some lovely party food. We even had a visit from Santa himself!

Week six Autumn two

This week the festive activities have continued in nursery as children have used tweezers to decorate a christmas tree and developed their cutting skills to cut out pictures and create a list for Father Christmas. 

In maths the children have looked at different patterns copying a friend building a tower, finishing a simple pattern and even having a go at creating their own pattern. 

In phonics we have learnt about things begining with "n" and sang the rhyme "Round and round the garden." 

We finished the week with our Christmas jumper day and a very fun 'Santa dash' where the children ran all the way around the school!  

Week five Autumn two

The Children have enjoyed reading The Gingerbread Man story this week, decorating a biscuit and then using different materials to decorate a gingerbraed man to use in role play. The children have been counting in maths through rhymes and pictures. We have discussed matching the amount of objects to the correct number. In phonics we have sand "Mary, Mary quite contrary" and listend for words beginning with i. 

Nursery rhymes that are taught in school can be found in the helping at home folder.

Week four Autumn two

This week, Christmas has come to the Nursery. The children have enjoyed their new reading area, independently looking through books and cuddling up to a teddy. They have also enjoyed the puppets, beginning to make up their own stories and role plays.

We have learnt about the very first Christmas and been busy preparing for our Christmas craft session next week.

In phonics the children have learnt a new rhyme, "Pat - a -cake," and found objects beginning with "p"

The children have also been practicing their positional language using small world resources. 

 

Week three Autumn two

This week the children have listened to the story Owl babies and completed paintings, collages and drawings of owls. They have matched baby animals to their mothers and discussed the differences. 

In maths the children have been representing numbers 1-3 in different ways using their fingers. How many different ways can they show you? 

Our sound this week was "t" the children have found items around the nursery starting with this sound. We made up a story "They got a ticket, went on a train along a track, passed a tree, through a tunnel and saw ten tigers!" 

Week two Autumn two.

This week, the nursery children have been developing their communication and language skills, along with their personal, social and emotional development. Based on the story Ruby's worry, we have been encouraging children to talk to each other and staff about how they are feeling. For Ruby her worry got smaller when she talked about it.  For Remembrance Day, they made beautiful poppies to honour the soldiers. As part of anti bullying week, the children designed their own unique sock patterns, embracing the importance of celebrating our differences. To end the week on a high note, we joined in with Children in Need fun on Friday, enjoying themed activities like a Pudsey spaghetti tuff tray! Thank you for your donations.

Week one Autumn two.

We hope you all had a fantastic half term! Nursery have been enjoying learning about Diwali and Bonfire Night. The children created some firework pictures and learning about what happens when we mix colours. Mrs Aarti had celebtrated Diwali and she shared with the children what happens in preperation and on the day. 

The children learned how to be safe on bonfire night and made some bonfires using sticks and leaves. We created a firework display in the style of Jackson Pollock flicking the paint from the brush. 

Week 8 Autumn 1

Our rhyme this week was "Miss Molly had a dolly" The children sang the rhyme and with support found the rhyming words. We sang the song fast, slow, loud and quiet, the children also made the sounds of the phone ringing, knocking at the door and cough, cough with their mouths. 

 

In maths the children have been subitising number 1 -3 using pictures from a book and the different resources from around the nursery. The children then brought this play answering the questions "What do you see?" "How do you see it? They would say "I see 2 here, 1 here and 3 here" 

 

The story this week was "Funny bones" the children made skeletons and had discussions about the different parts of the body. We also looked at some x - ray pictures showing the bones inside our bodies. 

Week 7 Autumn 1

This week our rhyme was "Hickory Dickory Dock" the children enjoyed singing this song and recognising the numbers on the clock. We talked about rhyming words and made up silly rhymes by changing the words. 

 

We read the story Spinderella and the children counted plastic spiders on the web, using tweezers to pick them up. Very brave!

 

In maths the children learned to sequence numbers. We looked at number rhymes and counting actions, such as jumps, stamps and claps.

Week 6 Autumn 1

Our rhyme this week was "One, two buckle my shoe" The children enjoyed singing this song and it linked into our maths where the children were putting numbers in the correct order. We sang other rhymes like 1,2,3,4,5 once I caught a fish alive. 

 

The children have also been learning about Autumn. They have made some lovely autumnal pictures. While creating these we talked about the different colours they can see around them and how the trees are changing.

Week 5 Autumn 1

This week our rhyme was "Incy Wincy Spider". The children listened to the sounds of the rain, birds tweeting and water going down the drain. We then made these sounds with our mouths "Pitter patter" "Gurgle, gurgle" and "weeee" as the spider was washed down the water spout. 

 

We all tried joining in with repeated refrains in stories as we read Aaaarrgghh spider book. The children enjoyed saying "Aaaarrgghh spider out you go!"

The children looked at other stories that contained repeated refrains in them, such as Owl Babies, and had a really good go and joining in. Well-done Nursery!

Week 4 Autumn 1

This week the children learned the rhyme "Hay Diddle, Diddle" The children listened to the sound of a cat meowing, a cow mooing and a dog barking and talked about what they could hear. 

The children had a go at singing the rhyme fast, slow, loud and quiet. 

 

In maths the children explored 2D shapes talking about them and creating pictures. 

 

We also made new friends as new children started in the nursery. 

Week 3 Autumn 1 

This week the children have been learning the rhyme "Baa Baa Black Sheep" They have been listening to animal sounds and talking about what they hear. They have been copying sound patterns and finding syllables in the words "black" "master" "little" and "sheep"

The children also looked at words that sound the same in the rhyme and some words that have the same initial sound. 

 

In maths the children have been comparing amounts using the vocabulary more and fewer, moving objects in and out of a group to make the different groups have more or fewer items in each one. 

 

During the week the children have also been introduced to the different rules and expectations while they are in Nursery. We have created our own class rules togther.
