Design and Technology Intent

At Springfield, Design and Technology begins in the Early Years, where children are encouraged to explore, create and problem solve using a range of materials and tools through play-based learning. As they move into Key Stage One, pupils build on these early experiences by learning to design purposeful functional products for themselves and others. They develop basic skills in cutting, joining, and assembling materials. Examples of this are creating puppets and preparing fruit and vegetables. In Key Stage Two, children deepen their understanding of the design process, applying technical knowledge and creativity to design, make and evaluate more complex products with specific users and purposes in mind. Examples of this are designing a game with an electrical component and framed strucutres.

Across all year groups, our lesson structure of 'plan,do,review' ensures a consistent approach where pupils first plan their ideas and designs then carry out the making process with increasing independence. It's important that the children review and evaluate their outcomes to reflect on successes and areas for improvement. This structured approach fosters creativity, resilience, and critical thinking, preparing children to become innovative problem solvers in an ever-changing world.
